Luka brings fresh flowers to Mt. Pyre every weekend.[break][break]

The route is familiar by now, but that doesn't make the walk any easier. Every time, it feels like she's marching to the beat of a funeral dirge.[break][break]

Time heals all wounds, or so they say. And it would be easy, perhaps, to forget. To stop visiting. So many memorials on the Mountain are testament to the same sentiment; covered in leaves and dust, crumbling stone and overgrown weeds. Luka glances towards the sky where the meteor looms and wonders if, should something happen to her in METENO's wake, her own companions' gravestones will look like that someday.[break][break]

Perhaps this is her last farewell to them. It's an unusually pessimistic thought, but Luka can't help it. These days, they seep in more and more often— to contain them is like trying to keep water from slipping through the cracks between her fingers.[break][break]

Her flowers from last week are still there, nestled and wilting in front of small granite headstones. Luka sweeps them away and replaces them with new ones: white lilies, the same that had adorned her father's coffin. The color is stark against polished stone and the earthy red-orange tones of fallen leaves.[break][break]

She spends several minutes there in quiet contemplation. Maybe it's prayer or maybe it's meditation...probably it's a bit of both. She hopes that her sentiments can reach the spirits here, that they can feel her regret and love and sorrow and her fervent desire for them to be at peace.[break][break]

The sound of crunching leaves and footsteps behind her pricks at her ears, but Luka ignores it for now. No doubt it's another mourner, just like her. This season tends to make people wistful, after all. Makes them chase after ghosts, out of respect or yearning or both.[break][break]

And with the meteor incoming, it makes sense for others to feel particularly sentimental.[break][break]

Leave it to the likes of the florist he bought it from (Elisabeth Fiorelli ) to decipher their meanings.[break][break]

Wearing a dark pea coat and scarf, the royal follows the stone-paved paths covered in moss and creeping vines. His BUTLER SINISTEA follows along right behind, drifting in and out of the fog whenever it lags behind. It had come here so often that it was now attuned to the spiritual energy that resided here. Every so often, it stopped to regard something curious; something unseen.[break][break]

As they head off onto a beaten path that wraps around the mountainside, however, Earl Grey releases a small noticeable chime. He floats ahead of his master with a sense of eagerness, disappearing into the fog ahead as Remiel slightly furrows his brow. The Sinistea didn't usually behave this way on Mt. Pyre.[break][break]

Caution and meditativeness had given way to something... excited?[break][break]

As boots crunch dead leaves beneath his soles, Remiel draws closer to the source before long. And the moment that pink hair comes into view, he finds himself wondering if he's imagining things. Earl Grey is the anchor that pins that sight to reality, however. Frankly, if the possessed teacup wasn't already encircling Luka in greeting, he would have walked on.[break][break]

But, alas, seeing her in such a state did pull on a heartstring he thought he'd snipped some time ago. He sighs; relenting. Looking up at the approaching meteor, that its light somehow manages to pierce the canvas of white mist above, the prince is given even more reason to practice empathy. So he takes a step forward.[break][break]

"Are you... okay?"[break][break]

It's all he can think to ask.

Luka wouldn't have turned around if not for the ghostly chime behind her. Ghost pokemon are far from unusual out here, but sinistea don't tend to frequent the mountaintop.[break][break]

"Earl Grey?" Surprise colors her voice as she greets the enchanted teacup with a tentative smile. "What are you doing...here..."[break][break]

She trails off, lost in staring at the man who appears behind the little ghost. In fact, to see him standing there is like witnessing a spectre herself.[break][break]

They haven't seen each other since the summer on his yacht, but it's been even longer since they last spoke. Luka's memories about their time in the Cloud are somewhat hazy in parts, but she still remembers the humiliating way she'd clung to him after forgetting their breakup, the way she had been so prepared to meet an uncertain end in his arms. And though she'd wanted to reach out to him since, she hadn't had the nerve.[break][break]

There are so many things she wants to ask him now. Did you mean what you said in the Cloud? Did you lie to me before?[break][break]

Why can't I ever find the love I dream about? Why can't I ever be happy?[break][break]

She stays quiet. She doesn't want to know the answer. Instead Luka just turns her gaze towards the sky, staring at the gaps in the fog and hoping that maybe someday, sunlight will stream through the clouds blanketing her life too.[break][break]

"I'm fine, Rem-"[break][break]

His name gets stuck between her teeth. Lingering affection has no place here.[break][break]

"-Monsieur Calcifet," she replies with polite indifference and a smile that doesn't reach her eyes. "Thank you for asking."[break][break]

[attr="class","ltrhead-text"]It's surprising how eager he is to hear her say his name after so long. Though it instills a sense of caution and purposeful nonchalance as well. Frankly, it's worrying. Remiel thought he'd worked past this longing already.[break][break]

When she cuts herself off to regard him formally, however, that eagerness is banished effortlessly. Her gazes is fixed to the sky. His goes downcast as he suppresses a small hum in his throat. He supposes that's all he needs to justify walking away now.[break][break]

Earl Grey, however, looks between them with a worried— almost pleading— look. Things didn't have to be this way... did they? If their meeting in the 'Cloud' had proven anything, it was that they still cared for each other on some level.[break][break]

So, looking up at her again, the royal plucks a single white magnolia from his bundle before daring to step forward. Crouching down close to Luka, but not too close, he adds it amongst the white lilies there without a word. After his hand parts from its stem, he simply remains crouched there, bowing his head in respect.[break][break]

"These are your Pokémon, I take it..." He mutters, finally breaking that silence before too long. Cobalt hues hesitantly shift in her direction, hoping not to offend or despair. "The ones who fought with you at the Tree of Life?"[break][break]

He asks, she answers. That should be it. She's given him a more than ample excuse to move on without being rude, for her demeanor has been far from welcoming. Luka had only come here to pay respects to her Pokemon, after all— she doesn't need to mourn the death of their relationship too.[break][break]

But Remiel surprises her when he bends and adds a flower to the bouquet she'd carefully assembled. The small act of tenderness catches her completely off guard, and for a moment she's almost angry about it. How dare he endear himself to her after everything he's done?[break][break]

Maybe if they were anywhere else, she'd allow herself to snap at him. But this is a place of reverence and respect, and she holds her tongue.[break][break]

"Mmn," she affirms softly. The ones who died after you abandoned me, she wants to add, but remembers herself again. Remiel is a smart man— he can put two and two together without her piling on the guilt. And though that's tempting, the only thing it would do is hurt him. Despite everything that's happened between them, she hasn't lost all of her kindness yet.[break][break]

Silence falls between them once again— but where it had once been easy, it's now tense and uncomfortable. Luka busies herself by looking at Earl Grey instead of the man beside her, and would like to think that the pangs of fondness she feels are extended towards the teacup alone.[break][break]

"Why are you here?" she asks suddenly, breaking the silence with a question of her own. She doesn't mean to sound accusing, but her normally angelic tone carries a slightly bitter note regardless.[break]

A look is all the possessed teacup needs to draw closer to Luka and dance around her. He'd cheered her up in such ways before, after all! Before master and maiden separated...

As she returns her attention to the former, however, Earl Grey gently places himself upon her shoulder and observes Remiel's response. The question shouldn't have caught him off guard nearly as much as it has. But he supposes it isn't the question at all that caught him off guard— the true culprit was the tone with which it was delivered.

Or had she forgotten that he'd been left scarred by the sharp edge of loss as well?

Adjusting the pair of flower bouquets tucked into the nook of his arm, the royal slowly rises from his crouched position and quietly clears his throat. "I'm delivering flowers..." The prince admits, casting a glance at her expression before continuing. "These are for the men and women of the Galarian military who never left Hoenn after the war..." He adds, carefully reaching into the bouquet of white flowers to organize them. "It's the least I can do."

Never mind that he'd been the reason they'd been enlisted in such an affair as the MEGALOPOLAN WAR in the first place. And never mind the smaller bouquet of purple flowers in his arm either. Neither made for pleasant conversation.

Luka looks down again, feeling rather chastened by his reply. "I see."[break][break]

She doesn't really know much about the Megalopolan War, much less Remiel's involvement in it. In fact, the more she thinks about it, the more she realizes she really doesn't know that much about the prince.[break][break]

She knows his likes and dislikes, how he takes his tea, and the way his hair tousles in the morning. But his life before they'd met is largely unknown to her. He'd never really talked about it, and she'd never been the type to pry.[break][break]

"I'm sorry," she says, because she is, but also because she thinks she needs to say something else. "I'm sure that wherever they are, they're grateful that you still remember them."[break][break]

Her eyes flit towards the posy of purple flowers in his hands. In the language of flowers purple is for admiration, success, and royalty. It's not a traditional mourning color, and it piques her interest. But it's not her place to say anything about it, so she doesn't.[break]

Had he answered wrong? This entire time, the sense that he was somehow intruding or slighting her further had never quite left. Perhaps he should have kept the details of his visit scarce. They didn't exactly spark joy, after all. Then again, he didn't want to seem rude and say next to nothing at all. Nevertheless, she surprises him.

Remiel Calcifet does not find himself deserving of forgiveness or gratitude, especially from those he got killed. But Luka's gesture is... kind. If he truly felt he was irredeemable, he supposed he wouldn't even bother making these monthly trips to Mt. Pyre to deliver flowers to the unclaimed dead. So, somewhat reluctantly, he bows his head in thanks.

"We should go before it gets too late..." He says, looking out at the sunset that slowly dips below the horizon. "Mt. Pyre can be a dangerous place at night... are you going to be okay descending the mountain yourself?"

This conversation is terrible.[break][break]
Stilted and awkward, words stuck together in a facsimile of conversation. They can't talk to each other like they used to, and Luka hates it. She wants to ask him more about what happened back then, she wants to be an angel of comfort like she used to be. But that wouldn't be appropriate now, would it?[break][break]

He says 'we' though, and for a moment her heart skitters in a way she knows it shouldn't. But when he asks about her wellbeing she realizes that the we refers to himself and Earl Gray.[break][break]

Of course it does. Why would he be talking about her?[break][break]

"I come here a lot," she answers, keeping her eyes on the gravestone in front of her. She hasn't yet realized that she's crying, but her voice comes out watery. "And I have Helios with me anyways. I'll be fine."[break][break]

It's as good of a dismissal as anything. But is this really going to be it? The meteor is coming, and this might be the last time they ever see each other. Can he really bear to leave her here, knowing that the world could very well end in just a few short days?[break][break]

He really had meant what he said, she supposes. I never loved you. It certainly feels like that now.[break][break]

Her voice stings sharp at his heart where the wound of their break-up still festered. Remiel's first instinct is to step forward and embrace her. Though he stops himself just before his body can act, playing it off as he gazes at the sky above. The sight of the approaching meteor is a stark reminder of what little time they might have left.

He sighs.

"Come with me. I won't rest easy until I'm sure you've descended safely. But I still have these flowers to deliver, so..." An offer he plays out like casual instruction. He waits for her response as Earl Grey tugs at her hand.

They aren't together anymore. It's probably unhealthy for her to still feel so affected by him. And she's pretty sure that her sudden and entirely unwelcome tears are the reason Remiel is extending this invitation in the first place. Guilt-tripping is never a good look.[break][break]

It would be pathetic of her to accept. Selfish too, probably. But with the end of the world looming, giving in to vices feels much easier.[break][break]

"Well, I..." She sniffs and starts to stand, dusting her knees with one hand and wiping her face with the other. "If Earl Grey wants me to, I guess. I've missed him." She gives the haunted teacup a weak smile, and fondly pokes his porcelain side. She dares not peek at Remiel, but the implication behind her words hangs in the air regardless.[break][break]
